They came, they saw, they said nice things...

Nerja Essential (November 2004)

Funny business at the Fillmore

Sarah Brookes went to see the show and ended up performing in it…

When Steven Smith invited me to the first performance of the Axarcomedy Group – I really believed I’d be staying in the audience… but that didn’t turn out to be strictly true. All I can say is beware sitting in the front row of one of their shows! More of that later.

Steven started the group to expand his interest in comedy writing and considering he wasn’t interested in performing at all he also proved to be a natural. The new group had meetings for several months by the time of their first show in October and I shall definitely be going back to see more. It’s about time there was something a bit different to do in Nerja – and this certainly was an enjoyable evening.

Almost all the sketches got good laughs and the audience seemed to be enjoying themselves. The group were to be congratulated as this was their first ever show. Most of the writers are new to comedy writing and three of the performers had never acted before. All this bodes well for the future as the team keeps improving and they attract more writers and performers.

Two of the performers were even newer to the stage – Boz and I had five minutes notice that we had "volunteered" to be in sketches but it turned out to be great fun – for me at least. The worst part was trying to hold my cardboard beard in place whilst delivering my lines in an attempted Spanish-accented male voice!

After the show I asked Steven how he thought it went. "We were mightily impressed with the turnout, especially since we did almost no promotion for the show. It proves beyond doubt that this region is crying out for more live entertainment.

"We’d like to thank Scott at The Fillmore Café Bar for giving us the opportunity to perform, Polly Cannon for making our wonderful Maria dresses, and our two star ‘volunteers’ - Sarah Brookes and Boz Cannon - who both did a fantastic job when they each appeared in a sketch." You’re welcome Steve – and thanks for the wine!

I asked if he would change anything for the next show, "it certainly wasn’t perfect." he replied, "some segments of the show went on too long but these are simple things to fix. The next show will contain sketches of three minutes or less."

Axarcomedy are constantly on the lookout for new writers and performers. In 2005 they intend to increase the frequency of shows - so the more people involved, the better. Contact them if you’re interested. They also plan to perform in towns other than Nerja. If you run a bar with room for a small cast to perform and capacity for over thirty and would like to have it filled with happy, laughing people please get in touch with them.
